SEEH is the design for a bioclimatic European school complex near Heraklion in Crete. The three school buildings are arranged around four courtyards. Classroom wings are dual aspect and accessed via the courtyards or first floor gallery allowing for natural daylighting from two sides and through-ventilation. Keeping the majority of the circulation space as external and covered reduces the cooling volume and energy consumption of the school. Public functions are clustered around a formal entrance square, giving each school a formal frontage to the public realm. A perforated facade provides solar shading to the south and west facades whilst allowing diffuse light and air into the classrooms.
